Marvel Studios' Eternals is almost two weeks away, and the film will supposedly change the entirety of the MCU in exciting ways after already stirring many heated debates along with its production. According to star Salma Hayek, there was almost a fight with director Chloé Zhao over the film's script.

In a new interview for Elle with co-stars Angelina Jolie, Lauren Ridloff, and Gemma Chan, Hayek, who will play Ajak in the film, shared that she and Nomadland Oscar winner Chloé Zhao got into a heated altercation while going over Eternals' script. "I had some problems with the script and we got into a serious fight at my house," Hayek recalls.

"We were both passionate. And she was like, 'No, but that's not how I designed it.' The people outside my house were calling it a fight, because we were kind of screaming," Hayek added. "We continued to talk and talk, and it went on for a long time. The people outside were so nervous that I was going to get fired.” Instead of what seemed like a long and difficult production filled with many altercations, Hayek said that her in-depth discussion with Zhao ultimately ended up being a productive one. "I came out and I said, 'Wow, I’m in love with her brain!' That was the best creative conversation I’ve ever had with a director in my life, and she felt the same. She told me, 'Wow! That was amazing.' It was just complete freedom. We found our middle ground. While finding it, we came up with other ideas. It was super exciting."

Jolie's fascination with Zhao also began to grow exponentially, as she believed the director wasn't an obvious choice for taking on a Marvel project (especially coming off of her recent success of filming indie projects), making it all the better. "It’s true what she’s saying. There was no ego. There was no time for it, no room for it with everyone," Jolie says, building off of Hayek and Zhao's discussion. "That’s part of who Chloé is. I was very drawn to the idea of her taking on Marvel because it didn’t seem obvious... I knew whatever it was going to be, she was going to bring something unique." Judging by this passionate conversation, it seems that Zhao was able to tackle a big Marvel epic like Eternals while still maintaining her original, unique vision.

Hayek and Jolie have recently spoken to Total Film about Eternals' impact, believing the film's inclusion of diversity and empowerment will resonate with many audiences. "No one [normally] calls and says, 'I’ve been thinking about you for my next film," Hayek commented. "And it’s also a huge movie, and you are one of the leads. And you get to be a superhero in your fifties, when you’re Mexican Lebanese.' The Eternals were smarter than Hollywood. You see that they’ve got the essence of something. Our diversity goes beyond the geography. It’s just a group of unique individuals."

Eternals centers on an immortal alien race that was created by the Celestials and has been living secretly on Earth for thousands of years. They finally have to come together to stop their evil counterparts known as the Deviants. The cast includes Richard Madden as Ikaris, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Lia McHugh as Sprite, and Harish Patel as Karun. The film will have an early premiere on October 24th at the Rome Film Festival and is expected to be a critical and box office success once it reaches its theatrical release. As announced recently, Disney has delayed many of its upcoming Marvel films, revealing the new release dates for 2022 and 2023. While not affecting this year's Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans will have to wait a little longer for more phase 4 content.

Eternals is set to release in theatres on November 5, 2022.
