Eternals star Kit Harington revealed that he turned down a superhero role prior to his time as one of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The star will be playing Dane Whitman, also known as the Black Knight, in the upcoming movie based on the superhero team from the Marvel comics.

The Eternals star reveals that he was approached to play a superhero, but he wouldn't comment on what the movie was out of respect for the creators and workers that gave their time to the film. There was a rumor that he was approached for 2015's Fantastic Four, but once again, there's no official confirmation of what the film was or if it was ever produced at all.

In an interview with Total Film, Harington talked about his prior superhero role offer and why Eternals felt like the right fit for him. "You know, the comic-book and superhero world has called once before, and I didn't like the role and the part and the time to do it," he said. "So I turned it down and then ['Eternals'] felt right to me. I liked that the character they were offering was not necessarily an Eternal. He was human. I did like that. I felt that I could do something with that, that he came with all these human faults. So it was the character that drew me to it, as well as it being the MCU, and how exciting."

Cast of Eternals

Harington is known for playing Jon Snow in the widely popular Game of Thrones television series. It's likely that the show's busy schedule was also a deterring factor in making him decide against a superhero role. With that being said, Harington was, fortunately, able to come back to the genre for a second chance with Eternals and was able to keep an open mind when it comes to superhero roles.

Eternals will be one of the first few movies of Marvel's phase 4 following Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Marvel is doing a good job at keeping the momentum going with the shows as well as the movies. They have content streaming on Disney Plus and are continuously dominating at the box office as Eternals prepares to plant the seeds for the future of their superhero world.

Eternals looks to bring in more of the galactic world to the MCU by presenting the Celestials and Deviants. Thanos has many ties to both sides, as he is a hybrid of both Deviant and Eternal blood, which is what made him stand out amongst the rest. Hopefully, fans get a look into his backstory and a deeper glimpse into the cosmic corner of the MCU as Marvel Studios continues to bring in more characters.

Eternals will be in theaters on November 5th, 2021.
