The Epic Games Store has aggressively pursued new users since it first launched in 2018. Major sales events have been a core aspect of this, with Epic Games offering steep discounts and coupons throughout the year. The Epic MEGA Sale is now an annual tradition on the Epic Games Store that originally started in 2019. It's a month-long event that offers, on top of the standard discounts and coupons, weekly big free games. Now the Epic MEGA Sale 2022 has returned and with it the free game Borderlands 3.The Epic MEGA Sale officially starts today, May 19, and will last until June 16. For four weeks, Epic will be giving away "blockbuster free games" from what it calls the Epic Vault, discounts of up to 75% for hundreds of games, and a new unlimited 25% off coupon. Additionally, there will be weekly MEGA Deals offering exclusive discounts updated each week.RELATED: Epic Games Spent a Ton on Borderlands 3 Exclusivity DealSeveral major recent game releases are being featured in the Epic MEGA Sale. These five featured games are Tiny Tina's Wonderlands discounted 20%, Ghostwire: Tokyo on sale for the first time at 34% off, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade at 29% off, Sifu with 20% off, and Far Cry 6, which has had its price cut by a whopping 50%. Additionally, for this week's MEGA Deals, Epic is offering three free DLC packs. First, a free set of Rocket League HNY Inverted Wheels, then the Fortnite Volcanic Assassin Quest pack, and then the Warframe Dual Kamas+Lotus Color Bundle. All bundles are claimed in-game.

As for the 25% coupon, Epic has made some changes. Epic Games Store users will recall that previous sales all featured a flat $10 reusable coupon. It seems that the days of that generous $10 off are now behind Epic Games. Instead, there's a reusable 25% off coupon. Games must be priced above $14.99 after the 25% discount has been applied for it to work, so $20 or higher. The coupons also don't work for pre-purchases, DLC, or in-game currency. They are still reusable, though.

For Epic Games Store users just looking for free games, the first free game of the sale is Borderlands 3. Another free game will be made available in a week, so check back in with the Epic Games Store next Thursday. It sounds like the games will be published by Epic, but maybe there will be a surprise.

All in all, the Epic MEGA Sale doesn't feel quite as MEGA as it has in past years. That's perhaps indicative of Epic Games taking a less aggressive approach to pulling in new users. There are still solid discounts on hundreds of games, however, whether there's a $10 coupon or not. The Epic MEGA Sale ends June 16.
