Even though Epic Games has only had Gears of War 3 out in the wild for a single day, gamers are still looking to the popular developer to reveal their next project. While we know it certainly won’t be a Gears of War product — at least not one that features Marcus Fenix’s Delta Squad — some are looking to Epic Game’s other flagship franchise, Unreal Tournament, as the next likely candidate.

As it turns out, though, Epic Games might not be targeting a future project just yet, and currently has no plan to resurrect the Unreal Tournament series.

Speaking with Epic’s President Mike Capps about everything from the developer’s recent collaboration with People Can Fly on Bulletstorm to the next phase of release for the Unreal Engine’s Universal Development Kit, Forbes was able to find out that Epic doesn’t even consider Gears of War 3 finished, and they aren’t working on anything Unreal Tournament related just yet.

“Unreal and Unreal Tournament continue to have a huge influence on the studio here, even though we’re not currently working on an Unreal IP project. Epic’s core game making philosophy of “when everyone says it’s done, keep polishing!” came from our experiences with Unreal Tournament. That’s the beginning of our quality-focused studio DNA.”

So, even though the next iteration of Unreal Tournament isn’t in development, Epic is holding true to many of lessons learned from their work on said game. As such, they are continuing to evolve the experience of Gears of War 3 — including several DLC missions and items that will extend the life of the game. Our review of Gears of War 3 pegged it as, not only the best entry in the series, but also one of the best action shooters to hit the Xbox 360.

Needless to say we don’t see Epic Games stopping anytime soon, but, if there’s anyone that deserves a little time off after a job well done, it’s certainly Epic.

Would you like to see Epic Games next project be a Gears of War offshoot or a new Unreal Tournament? Or would you like to see an entirely new IP?

Gears of War 3 is out now for the Xbox 360.
