Epic Games Store users can currently claim Ancient Enemy and Killing Floor 2, but as always, these two titles will be replaced on July 14 at 10 am CT. They will be replaced by a game pack and a game called Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap.

The Wonder Boy series may not be the most well-known to Epic Games Store users, but this title is a remake of a 1989 game. It’s popular enough to have a staying power few games ever achieve. Indeed, it’s well worth checking out for any Epic Games Store user.

It should be noted that this is a direct sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land; however, for those wanting to check this out for free, it’s worth noting fans don’t lose much information. The story set up is pretty simple. At the end of Monster Land, Wonder Boy has been cursed by the Meka Dragon, which results in him obtaining a ton of new forms. The new game sets him out on a quest to return to human form by getting to the Dragon's room.

Epic Games Store – Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Gameplay

Graphics-wise, everything in Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is hand-drawn. This is obvious in every action-platformer gameplay moment, and it’s a shining feature of the title. Players will explore the various parts of Monster land, defeat enemies to obtain items like arrows, fireballs, weapons, and armor, as well as obtain all forms and abilities possible. Players begin as Lizard-Man who spits fire, and over the course of the game, they will unlock Mouse-Man (who can cling to certain blocks), Piranha-Man (swimming), Lion-Man (vertical slash attack), and Hawk-Man (for flight).

Otherwise, it’s a pretty standard action platformer where players will face level traps, enemies, and will need to fight and jump to get through. As a remake, this title does feature some new features like instant weapon-toggling, additional difficulty settings, the ability to play Wonder Girl, and hidden bonus areas not included in the original Wonder Boy series.

The overall 80s gameplay design rings through, with the remake bringing the best modernizations to an otherwise nostalgic experience. It’s hard to explain, but it feels as simple as a classic Mario game with the current quality of platformers like Rogue Legacy 2.
