Epic Games has released new data regarding its 2020 wrap-up, including the most popular games purchased and played on the platform for the year. Several of these aren’t very surprising, while others garnered more attention than some fans gave them credit for.

Overall, the Epic Games Store list spans multiple genres and covers many different bases in terms of gamer playstyles. There are ten top games for the year that stand out among the others.

The ten most played games on the Epic Games Store in 2020 were: Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Satisfactory, Fortnite, Snow Runner, Godfall, Borderlands 3, Rocket League, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Rogue Company. While a few of these games were new to 2020, several of them were simply given new life. Rocket League got new events, Fortnite released new character skins, and Grand Theft Auto 5 continued to remind players what made the franchise so popular in the first place.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla being one of the top games is not surprising in the least. The newest entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise sees players scour the English countryside in search of treasure, powerful weapons—such as Odin’s mythical spear Gungnir—and villages to conquer. This game was a contender for Game of the Year, so that alone is enough to assume its spot at the top of Epic Games’s list.

Fortnite, the ever-growing battle royale titan, is another obvious choice. The building, shooting, and partying game seems to still be going strong after all of these years. There was recently a new season added to Fortnite, which is keeping it fresh and fun for players old and new. Dozens of licensed characters—such as Deadpool, John Wick, and Kylo Ren—let players enjoy the game as seriously or as silly as they choose to.

Borderlands 3 continued being as popular as ever in its second year of life. There were several DLC updates for the game that brought new content and abilities for players to keep coming back. There was a second season pass that started in the Fall, but players are already wondering if there will be a third season pass for Borderlands 3 to keep the game going even longer.

2021 is sure to see many of these games continue to be as popular as they were in the last year. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla shows little signs of slowing down anytime soon, while games like Fortnite, Rocket League, and Borderlands 3 will likely still have a large fanbase throughout the new year. With plenty of new games slotted to release in the next few months, it will be very interesting to see what the next list looks like for Epic Games.
