On December 22, the Epic Games Store gave away its seventh free mystery game, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. This tactical RPG sees a group of mutants search the post-apocalyptic Zone for the one man who can maintain their home, just to learn the truth of their existence and their creator to flee. It’s a fun game for those who like tactical RPGs, but the promo continues on.

The Epic Games Store is giving away a ton of games for the holidays, under its mystery game promotion. Every day, instead of every Thursday, a new game is revealed and given away at 10 am CT. For December 23, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is being replaced with Vampyr.

Players take on the role of Jonathan Reid in Vampyr, a doctor turned vampire torn between his Hippocratic Oath to do no harm and his bloodthirsty nature to feed on humans. How he balances this is up to the player, who is under no obligation to kill innocents in the game. There is a greater mystery at large too, with the game interestingly being set during the Spanish Flu era in London. Overall, Vampyr has a “fair” rating on OpenCritic, with the top critic average being 72.

Free is free, though, and many who decide to check out Vampyr may come to love it or hate it on their own terms. Still, one of the best aspects of free games via PS Plus, Games with Gold, the Epic Games Store itself (or any other number of gaming subscriptions) is always finding that personal gem that someone wouldn’t have played otherwise. Vampyr could very well prove to be that gem for other gamers too.

Vampyr or just about any other Epic Games Store mystery promo game could be that perfect gift. Thus far, beyond the two aforementioned already, the Epic Games Store has also given away Shenmue 3, Neon Abyss, Remnant: From the Ashes, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Loop Hero, and Second Extinction. As of this writing, there are still 6 games to be given away via this mystery promo.

What they could be remains to be seen, but all in all, it seems safe to say that no gaming subscription service celebrates the holidays quite like the Epic Games Store and its mystery promotion, which in all likelihood will return next year as well.

Epic Games Store users typically get a handful of free games every month.
