Epic Games Store has had an incredible April. Not only has the service offered two games per week for the past few weeks, but they’ve been a good mix of solid games and small hidden gems. Titles like Total War, Rogue Legacy, Vanishing of Ethan Carter, XCOM 2, and far more have really gone a long way in for the Epic Games Store. Each title really adds to its hot streak.

The thing is, all good things come to an end. Perhaps it’s sooner than some fans hoped and perhaps it’s a little too early to say for sure, but it seems the Epic Games Store hot streak has come to an end. At the very least, it’s clear that Epic Games Store is starting May off on a weaker foot than it did in April.

Epic Games Store May 2022 – Terraforming Mars

Epic Games Store is offering Just Die Already and Paradigm from April 28 to May 5, both of which are smaller but incredibly zany and interesting hidden gems, and they will be replaced by Terraforming Mars on May 5. This is a strategy game adaptation of the board game of the same name, where players must make Mars suitable for humanity. It’s a pretty solid strategy game, but it fits in so many niche boxes that it lacks the general appeal of games seen over the past month.

Board game lovers will likely like it, Sci-Fi fans may find it interesting, and strategy game fans may find something that meshes well with their preference. But that’s split among a huge population, and to be fair, Sci-Fi strategy board game adaptations are nothing all that common. This may limit those interested in it, ending Epic Games Store’s hot streak.

Now, that’s not to say anything against Terraforming Mars. It has many fans, though it’s hard to gauge its general reception. This is because it doesn’t really have a positive or negative reception online; it doesn’t really get discussed outside of its own circles. That, in and of itself though, speaks to the niche nature of the game.

What will really set the tone for Epic Games Store in May is what comes after Terraforming Mars. One potential dip in quality doesn’t necessarily end a hot streak, but two would likely suggest that April itself was the anomaly, not Terraforming Mars. Either way, Epic Games Store does excel at putting hidden gems on a pedestal, and there will certainly be those who prefer this approach.
