Every Thursday at 10am CT, The Epic Games Store provides fan with a selection of games. For example, from now until July 29 at the same time, players can claim Verdun and Defense Grid: The Awakening on the Epic Games Store. One notable tradition of the Store, too, is to reveal the games for the coming week.

Beginning July 29, fans know they'll be able to claim Mothergunship and Train Sim World 2 on the Epic Games Store. The latter may be a bit more obvious, if not so nuanced, but many may be curious as to what these games are and if they're worth picking up. The simple answer, as always with any game that is free, is yes. But for those who want to know a little more, here's what fans should know before diving in.

Mothergunship on the Epic Games Store

In short, Mothergunship is a bullet-hell FPS, but this Epic Games Store offering is slightly more complicated than that. It takes the best of both genres and puts them together well, while giving players the ability to craft the biggest, most insane guns. They need them too, as they attempt to fight off a seemingly-endless horde of aliens who have conquered Earth. At times, it's mindless shooting, but it balances this with just enough strategy required to make it even more fun. Crafting these weapons, getting into tense fights against giant bosses, and more all par for the course in Mothergunship, and those looking for some quick-shooting and simple fun, Mothergunship may just tick the box.

  • Mothergunship on Metacritic (PC): 72 Critic Score, 7.2 User Score.

Train Sim World 2 on the Epic Games Store

Train Sim World is notable for the player's ability to exit the train, in order to complete tasks such as refueling. It's a notable difference that helps it stand out from other train simulators, with TSW2 also adding the Livery Editor and Scenario Designer. This sequel of the sim adds two new routes and multiple trains, while receiving a ton of post-launch support. Overall, it adds all of the realism and immersion of a typical train simulator game but typically takes it a step further; for example, those who have played Train Sim World 2020 can still use its add-ons in TSW2 (with few exceptions).

  • No available Metacritic critic or user score. Open Critic state 73 is the Top Critic Average, with 71% of critics recommending it.

While a frantic FPS and a train sim seem like completely differing games, they are both those that offer players a concentrated task that serves well as a relaxing or intense experience. It works either way depending on the players, but perhaps for those who don't really care for this selection, it's worth mentioning that the Epic Games Store August free games are only going to continue adding.

The Epic Games Store gives away free games weekly.
