The weekly pattern of releasing a free game and revealing the next one on Epic Games Store has always been nice, as it is both rewarding in the here and now and potentially hype-building for the next release. For example, Cities: Skylines is available for free on EGS until March 17. Fans have known for a whole week this would be the next game, and while Cities: Skylines was once a controversial PS Plus entry, this sort of knowledge prevents a similar level of upset over a simulation game.

Of course, while Cities: Skylines isn’t for everyone, they have next week’s game (releasing on March 17) to look forward to. In Sound Mind will replace Cities: Skylines, and as a psychological horror game, there will be some who are excited and some who aren’t. Ultimately, this method helps handle expectations. But, In Sound Mind isn’t as big a title as some horror games out there, so for anyone interested one way or another, this is what Epic Games Store users should know.

Epic Games Store: In Sound Mind Story Details

In Sound Mind was made by developer We Create Stuff, coming from the creators of Nightmare House 2. In Sound Mind revolves around discovering a series of victims and former patients of the main character, who were exposed to a certain chemical, all the while exploring memories as players cannot escape their own mind. There’s also a very popular cat in In Sound Mind, named Tonia. As a psychological horror game, all the elements can expect of the genre are there: bizarre visions, fear-inducing moments, an eerie soundtrack, sentient mannequins, and more.

Epic Games Store: In Sound Mind Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, In Sound Mind is played from a first-person perspective, with the player equipped with a trusty flashlight in this eerie setting. There are a lot of puzzles to solve, hinging on the bizarre and scary, as well as unique boss fights to take on. There’s also Metroidvania-style exploration, some action sequences, and platforming moments, proving that a horror game can really do it all.

While some horror games don’t give players weapons, upping the fear factor, In Sound Mind provides players with ways to get weapons and doesn’t give up that fear factor. There are player weapons, a simple gun, a flare gun, and more—all set in eerie locations that are abandoned even if they shouldn’t be. Overall, anyone with experience with horror games can probably have some pretty reasonable expectations going into it.

But what does set it apart from another run-of-the-mill horror game is its reception. In Sound Mind impressions have always been strong, and review scores include a 75 Metacritic rating and an 8.0 user score. Notably, the general vibe around the game online is largely positive. Thus, In Sound Mind might be a pretty big win for Epic Games Store users.

Epic Games Store users typically get a handful of free games every month.
