Update 6/2: The Epic Games Store has revealed the next free mystery game, and as it turns out, this theory was incorrect. The Epic Games Store free mystery game for June 2 - June 9 is Wolfenstein: The New Order, not Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Original story follows.

Epic Games Store is promoting its ongoing Epic Mega Sale through a special mystery games promotion where it gives users a free new game every week, but keeps the next week's free game a secret. The Epic Games Store free mystery games have been fairly high profile this year, with Borderlands 3 serving as the first free mystery game and BioShock: The Collection being the current free game.

Fans are left wondering what the next Epic Games Store free game will be. They'll find out for sure come Thursday, June 2 at 10:00am CT, but in the meantime, they have their theories. The latest theory about the Epic Games Store free mystery game was shared to Reddit by user kabirsingh84, and if they are correct, it seems as though EGS users will have another Grand Theft Auto game to add to their collection.

The Reddit post goes into more detail about the theory, but the gist is that the clue references the Chow Yun-Fat movie A Better Tomorrow, also known as True Colors of a Hero. It is a gangster movie, part of a trilogy, that released in 1986. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a game about organized crime, it's set in 1986, and it too is part of a trilogy.

Other clues are the fact that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - The Definitive Edition left PlayStation Now on May 2, potentially freeing it up to be given away on other platforms. Alternatively, it's suggested that the next free game could be Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition in its entirety as opposed to just Vice City on its own.

While this theory is interesting, fans shouldn't hold their breath. Previously, Epic Games Store users theorized that the May 26 free game was going to be Sleeping Dogs, but it wound up being BioShock. So while it's possible this theory is correct, it's also possible that it is way off-base. Then again, Grand Theft Auto 5 was free on the Epic Games Store at one point in time though, so anything is possible. Fans won't know for sure until the next Epic Games Store free game is revealed on June 2.

It should be noted that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - The Definitive Edition being free would satisfy another theory that fans have about the promotion. So far, all the Epic Games Store free mystery games have been published by 2K Games, and while Rockstar Games publishes its own titles, it and 2K are both owned by the same parent company, Take-Two Interactive.
