The Epic Games Store arrived a year ago with the promise of free games throughout 2019, and the program granting titles big and small to anyone willing to grab them appears to be continuing into the new year. The store's next free game, roguelike RPG adventure For the King, will be available to download for all Epic users on January 9th.
Drawing inspiration from the ever-popular roguelike genre and tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, For the King puts players into a procedurally generated world full of quests, turn-based fantasy battles, and unrelenting difficulty. Whether on a solo quest or in a party of up to three adventurers, the title is built to be replayed with unique encounters and strategic elements to consider with every new run.
For the King has been out on Steam since April 2018 and on the Switch since last May, and in the time since its release developer IronOak Games has kept the title updated with a number of free content expansions. Players interested in grabbing the PC version of the game can save $20 by waiting for the giveaway, which is set to replace the current trio of free games from Epic: snowboarding and winter sports game Steep, and the first two entries in the Darksiders action RPG series.
Elsewhere on the Epic Store, the platform is also running an encore of its debut Holiday Sale, granting discounts on some of the launcher's most popular games until January 7th. The promotion follows up two big giveaway periods from Epic: the Fortnite Winterfest event and the store's 12 Days of Free Games.
For The King will be available for free from January 9th to January 16th. The next free drop from the Epic Games Store is to be determined, but fans can likely expect word on it at the end of the current giveaway. The platform's early strategy for expanding its user base, in addition to the free games, was a collection of exclusive PC games, including triple-A titles like Borderlands 3. While controversial, the platform has seen enough success with both programs that it looks like Epic will be sticking with its existing plans.
