Currently, Epic Games Store users are able to claim Star Wars: Squadrons, but on December 1 at 10 am PT, this will be replaced by two games: Fort Triumph and RPG in a Box. Unlike the brand association with Star Wars: Squadrons, one of the better Star Wars games of late, it's incredibly likely that some fans haven't heard of Fort Triumph and RPG in a Box before their addition here.

Indeed, the Epic Games Store excels at highlighting worthwhile, smaller games, all for the price of free. RPG fans will be able to pick these up between December 1 and December 8. It's currently unknown what will be given away between December 8 and December 15, but thereafter, it has been reported that the Epic Games Store Mystery Game Promotion (where it gives away a game every day for two weeks or so) will return. It's going to be an exciting month no matter what, and Fort Triumph and RPG in a Box are kicking that off.

Epic Games Store: Fort Triumph

fort triumph

Fort Triumph bills itself as a strategy game in the vein of XCOM fused with the world exploration of Heroes of Might and Magic. Players lead a group of heroes in a fantasy plot that doesn't take itself seriously, parodying the many tropes of the genre, but while the story is all fun and games, the combat is not. Fort Triumph is a permadeath game, meaning once and whenever players lose a hero, they're gone. And when playing, they never know what's next because each mission has varied objectives on procedural maps. Combat also emphasizes each character's faction, class, benefits from the base, resource management, character skills, and environment, as players are capable of using just about everything as a weapon.

The hero design is meant to give Fort Triumph a degree of replayability, as players are able to gain specific traits and cross-class skills for their heroes, meaning players can make something unique every time they play. All in all, Fort Triumph scratches a very specific itch for a fantasy tactics game, but it's definitely worth trying for any fantasy or tactics fan using the Epic Games Store.

Epic Games Store: RPG in a Box

RPG in a Box

RPG in a Box is a software that allows players to build classic RPGs to fit their own style; in other words, it's a game about making games with no game development knowledge required. It comes with plenty of features that allow players to realize their ideal classic RPG, however they want to design it. RPG in a Box is constantly being expanded, but what it boils down to is a few core features that allow players to create their game.

  • A Voxel Editor lets players build and animate tiles, objects, and characters with 3D designs.
  • A Map Editor allows players to create a grid-based map to take advantage of tiles built, as well as place a plethora of objects and NPCs.
  • Players are capable of creating their own dialogue using a visual flowchart, as well as creating branching dialogue based on choice and conditions.
  • Players can customize their camera angle/approach or select from a standard array of possible cameras: standard, isometric, offset, direct, overhead, or first-person.
  • Players can customize the combat system of their RPG, with options right now including turn-based combat, real-time combat, or menu-based combat.
  • And much more.

Epic Games Store users get a handful of games every month.
