Following the lineage of Amplitude Studios' games can be a challenge. Endless Space's success in 2012 led to both Endless Legend and Dungeon of the Endless, in turn leading to Endless Space 2, culminating in Amplitude's upcoming game release, Endless Dungeon. The name itself may have been confusing, but Amplitude is now ready to let Endless Dungeon's gameplay speak for itself. The studio debuted Endless Dungeon's gameplay today during the Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live event.

Endless Dungeon is a unique but familiar experience. It mixes tower defense elements, with players collaborating to protect crystals from waves of enemies. But it's also a roguelite, with every playthrough being a unique experience. That's not all, though, as it's also a dungeon crawler, tasking players with progressing through an ancient space station. And that doesn't even capture Endless Dungeon's base 2D shooter action. If Endless Dungeon was a pizza, Amplitude is clearly a fan of a variety of toppings.

The trailer for Endless Dungeon doesn't delve into the intricacies of its gameplay systems, however. It covers four rules for four different aspects of very basic gameplay elements, perhaps to persuade viewers how approachable Endless Dungeon may be compared to previous games in the Endless franchise.

Rule one has to do with choosing weapons that fit the enemies that players will be facing off against in a given stage. Rule two has to do with protecting a crystal, the game's tower defense mechanic that players have to protect in order to succeed. Rule three explains how Endless Dungeon is a cooperative multiplayer game and players have to work together. Lastly, the fourth rule is about adapting the squad to meet the challenge at hand. Endless Dungeon's predecessor, Dungeon of the Endless, has twenty-five different heroes to play as. Odds are Endless Dungeon will have a diverse selection of heroes to play as, too.

Much remains to be confirmed for Endless Dungeon, as Amplitude Studios continues to work on the game. For example, three characters are shown in the trailer, but Amplitude has previously said that four players is under consideration. Dungeon of the Endless also allowed for up to four players, but Endless Dungeon may be too action-heavy to balance for four players.

For the time being, Endless Dungeon is targeting 2022 for release and the new trailer appears to just be in an effort to keep the Endless series and the new game in people's memory. Regardless, can sign up for the game's mailing list and earn an exclusive skin. Endless fans should keep their ears to the ground for more information soon.

Endless Dungeon will release in 2022 PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
