Over the years, action RPGs have been heading down a trend of becoming more genuinely challenging while still being lenient enough for as many players as possible to adjust to the difficulty curve. Though, the first boss in every action RPG still acts as a gatekeeper barring the way to the rest of the game.

It is at this point that players either rise to the challenge or succumb to bitter defeat. While the latter is not the end, it is possible that some players get frustrated after too many failed attempts and quit the game for good. Doing so is always a shame, especially in well-crafted and interesting games like Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, where players must learn and develop their own combat tactics based on the options presented to them for one of the most unique and fulfilling 2D sidescrolling adventures to be released recently.

The learning curve can be a bit steep, as players will need to perform all the important parts of regular combat (attacking, dodging, etc.) but will also have to consider which spirits to equip and when to use them. The trial by fire that will allow one to understand how to approach combat in Ender Lilies the best is when the player faces off against the first boss in the game, Guardian Siegrid.

player dodging past the boss's horizontal swing attack.

Despite appearing very early on in the game, and potentially catching players off guard, the first boss of the game, Guardian Siegrid, will not hold back. She will utilize her flail liberally to slam the player with a boulder on a chain at almost any angle.

While one's first instinct may be to get behind Siegrid and deliver back attacks, players should be wary, as some of the boss' attacks can hit behind her as well. With that said, attacking the Guardian from behind is still the best tactic for Phase 1, as even if Siegrid unleashes the flailing attack that can hit behind her, she will be stationary while unleashing this assault, meaning that a single dodge is enough to evade damage.

Players should try to get behind her to land a few hits before backing off while Siegrid does her "around the world" attack move. Getting behind her to trigger this slow and strong attack will prevent the boss from using attacks where she can move and unveil strikes simultaneously, which are trickier to dodge. Use this method to deplete the foe's health bar, but don't get too confident, as she has another form.

boss in her bigger form charging at the player.

After a short transformation into her vastly more intimidating form, Guardian Siegrid in Phase 2 of the boss fight will act very differently than before. She no longer possesses the flail and instead uses powerful arms tipped in wicked claws to slash at the player.

Siegrid will also jump and move around a lot more than before, which can make predicting and avoiding her attacks more challenging due to her greater reach. However, her attacks also now have a more noticeable wind-up and can be easier to see coming if one keeps an eye on her hands.

The best place to hit the boss is, again, from behind, but while close enough to essentially be standing on one of her huge heels. This will cause Siegrid to try and hit the player with a backhand swipe, which does not do much damage and is easy to avoid, even by side-stepping instead of dodging. Staying in this spot will trigger this less-than-deadly attack more than Siegrid's other moves and allow the player to whittle down the boss's health until she is defeated for good.
