Emma Watson is under attack by netizens after the release of an uncorroborated report alleging that she made an inconsiderate remark against Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling.

Tensions between Watson and Harry Potter author Rowling have allegedly been building ever since Rowling came out with a series of controversial anti-trans tweets. While Watson did not directly condemn Rowling for her statements, she did speak out in opposition to Rowling's stance, saying that trans people "deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned." Watson also appeared to make a slight toward Rowling when she presented at the BAFTAs this year, saying that she was there "for all the witches."

Earlier this month, online publisher Giant Freakin Robot wrote an article asserting that Watson expressed interest in returning to the Harry Potter franchise if Rowling was not involved. According to the report, such a claim was made by "trusted and proven sources," however, neither Watson nor her team has confirmed it. Since the rumor went viral on Twitter this past weekend, several people have accepted it as truth and subsequently slammed Watson, with her biggest critics saying that she is being ungrateful for Rowling and all that she has done for her career. Some have even promised to boycott Watson's future film projects in an attempt to "cancel" her career altogether.

Amid the growing concerns of the Harry Potter fandom, Evanna Lynch, the actress who played Luna Lovegood in the film series, assured fans that there is no bad blood between Watson and Rowling despite their difference of opinion. Lynch's co-star Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in The Chamber of Secrets and Deathly Hallows Pt. II, also came out in support of Lynch's comments, confirming that the cast has nothing but love and respect for Rowling. Still, the vitriol for Watson continues online, despite the fact that she has been keeping a low profile these past few months.

Watson has not yet released a response to the Giant Freakin Robot article, but she did address other rumors being made about her in an earlier tweet from 2021. She said that most headlines about her, whether it regards her rumored engagement or supposed retirement from acting, are simply ways for online publishers to "create clicks" each time they are revealed to be true or untrue. She also added that if she has news, she promises to share it with her fans directly.

The Harry Potter collection is now streaming on HBO Max.
