Edge of Tomorrow star Emily Blunt revealed why a follow-up to Warner Bros.' beloved sci-fi/action film hasn’t been made yet. Despite the physical demands of the original, Blunt is still game to star in a sequel.
Directed by Doug Liman, 2014's Edge of Tomorrow was based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Japanese graphic novel All You Need Is Kill. The film adaptation saw Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) and Special Forces Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Blunt) attempt to take down an alien race known as the Mimics. After being murdered at the hands of the Mimics, Cage finds himself stuck in a unique time-loop. Christopher McQuarrie, who notably directed the Cruise-led blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Fallout, penned the script alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. The film grossed $370 million worldwide on a pricy $178 million budget.
Despite underperforming at the box office, a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow has been rumored for years. During a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Blunt said a sequel is unlikely because it would be too expensive to make. “We wanted to, but honestly, I think the movie is too expensive. I just don’t know how we’re going to do it,” said Blunt. “I love would it, Doug Liman would love it, Tom [Cruise] would love it…we would all love to do it." Last year, Blunt joked that she would be 70 before they make another one and that they will need the de-aging technology used on Martin Scorsese's The Irishman to make it work.
The actress also revealed that she was scared before filming Edge of Tomorrow because the production team was male-dominated and the role required her to train for three months beforehand. Much to her surprise, Edge of Tomorrow was one of the most rewarding projects she’s ever done. “It was one of the first experiences that I had where I was completely brought into the fold creatively. I was in every script meeting, and I was treated like gold on it," Blunt said.
At this time, it remains unseen if a sequel to the beloved film will be made. In 2019, Liman confirmed that a script from Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying) was finished. The director noted that the sequel would get made once Cruise and Blunt formally committed to the project. It was reported that the two stars wouldn’t make deals until they found the script of their liking. Blunt previously stated that she was forced to pass on the film due to commitments to Mary Poppins Returns.
Blunt will next be seen alongside Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe in the long-awaited sequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place. The horror film, which was directed and written by The Office’s John Krasinski, was forced to delay its theatrical release because of the global pandemic. Blunt and Krasinski are seeking financial compensation from Paramount Pictures because the studio decided to shorten the film’s theatrical window and move it to Paramount Plus 45 days after its theatrical opening. Both actors have a contract that compensates them based on the film’s box-office performance.
