Elon Musk is well known for making exaggerated proclamations, whether it revolves around Tesla, SpaceX, or any given topic on Musk's Twitter account. These promises aren't always reliable or are as reliable as they are ridiculous. Announcing that Steam, the PC gaming storefront and digital platform, is coming to Teslas is one of these bizarre ideas. Yet Musk isn't backing down from the possibility of Steam running in Tesla vehicles. He's even saying that Steam on Tesla could arrive sooner than later. This past week the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley community Twitter account made a post about playing games in their Teslas. The post included a short video showing how a Tesla Model X owner plays various games on their dashboard console while the electric vehicle is supercharging. They even connect a PlayStation 4 DualShock controller to play Cuphead. Elon Musk then replies to the Twitter post providing an update on the status of Steam for Tesla vehicles.RELATED: U.S. Government Expresses Concerns over Video Games in Tesla CarsMusk's short response first confirms that Tesla is still working on bringing the Steam storefront to Teslas and is "making progress." This is an expected, ambiguous statement. But, befitting Musk, he goes a step further, saying that a demo will "probably" be made available next month. In other words, Steam or a test version of Steam could roll out to Tesla drivers as soon as August.

The definition of "demo" bears a lot of weight in Musk's Twitter post. He could be referring to a version of Steam that doesn't actually play any games, just to test how the software runs on Tesla vehicles. It could mean that a single game will be playable or something similarly small just for testing purposes. Or he could mean that a more substantial beta version of Steam will roll out on Teslas, but only to certain drivers to start.

Not only is Musk's definition of "demo" leaving a lot to the imagination, but the word "probably" leaves open the possibility of this feature not arriving any time soon. Musk tends to commit to the release of things much too early, or like with Twitter to cancel those commitments entirely. Tesla owners may not want to set their expectations too high for Steam arriving soon.

If Steam can run on a small handheld PC like the Steam Deck, there's really no reason why it can't run on Teslas. That doesn't mean Teslas will receive the same attention and optimization as the Steam Deck, though. And there's certain to be controversy, if not pushback, regarding Valve putting its gaming platform on a moving vehicle. Valve wouldn't like to see news articles about Tesla crashes where the driver was playing games on Steam. Regardless, it sounds like there will be more news about Steam on Tesla vehicles soon.
