Elizabeth Olsen has given fans plenty to speculate about regarding Scarlet Witch's place in the MCU after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The actress managed to stir up fan excitement while declining to answer the question asked at a recent fan event.

Scarlet Witch, as portrayed by Olsen, has been a particularly fan-favorite character in the MCU, starting with her debut in the mid-credit scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and featuring prominently in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame before settling in as the conflicted lead on her Disney Plus series Wandavision. While Wandavision was a triumph for the character and spawned a spinoff series focused on Agatha Harkness, fans most recently got to see Wanda on the other side of the moral divide as her quest for a hold on her fleeting family led her down a dark path in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Olsen added credence to the inevitability of her return during a question and answer session at the 2023 Comfest-Con (Via Agents of Fandom). When asked by a fan what future storyline she wanted for Wanda, Olsen played coy. "Well, honestly, if I were to tell you exactly what I would want, I think I would be spoiling something. Because, Kevin Feige genuinely asks us what we want to do with the character and then, he does it," she said. "So, I think what I… I don't know if I can share. I just want to come back." The sentiment is earnest, as Olsen has made no secret of her love for portraying the Scarlet Witch. Furthermore, her suggestion that her desires for the character might be spoilers could point to already completed behind-the-scenes discussions about the next step for the character.

Wanda appearing as the Scarlet Witch in Multiverse of Madness

While the character was seemingly removed from the MCU equation with the emotional climax of Multiverse of Madness, there has been little doubt in fans' minds that they’ll get to see the Scarlet Witch again, with Kevin Feige all but confirming this in an interview. After invoking the uncertainty surrounding her supposed demise, Feige said, “There really is so much more to explore. We still haven’t touched on many of her core storylines from the comics.”

While the appeal of more Scarlet Witch is obvious, the MCU might see more of a downturn as the years of cinematic domination keep piling up. While execs are aware of the fatigue setting among many, Feige's approach to the MCU might not work out well enough to fix the issue. Whether his genre-hopping tactics will rekindle the old spark or taint the MCU's offerings with a gimmicky hue will have to be judged in the coming months and years.
