Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be the film to feature the next highly-anticipated appearance of Elizabeth Olsen as the MCU's Scarlet Witch. Olsen has recently shared just how much enjoyment she got out of the process of playing the iconic Marvel role.

Before joining Doctor Strange 2, Olsen made her MCU debut as the Scarlet Witch (a.k.a Wanda Maximoff) during the post-credits scene of the famous Captain America: The Winter Soldier. From that small cameo, Olsen eventually became an official member of the Avengers team when she appeared in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. As Olsen would go on to star in other massive projects such as Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, she over time became a beloved fan favorite amongst audiences. Thus, it was only a matter of time before she landed her very own spin-off TV series, WandaVision. The show provides fans with much-needed clarity due to the fact that it reveals Wanda's feelings about the massive sense of loss and destruction that lingered from Endgame. Not only does Wanda lose many of her noble friends such as Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), but she also loses her one true love. She had fallen in love with Vision (Paul Bettany), a proclaimed synthezoid.

Following all the devastation and heartbreak she had endured, Wanda craves total power and control. Throughout WandaVision, she begins to utilize her Chaos magic in order to rule over Westview, New Jersey. Wanda is able to create her perfect dream life by resurrecting Vision, even birthing two of her very own sons into existence. Yet, Wanda's tainted vision quickly shatters when she realizes the damage that ensues when you try to continuously resist reality. She ends up putting her family and friends in great danger due to her actions, as well as the rest of the fellow citizens of Westview. During the recent Doctor Strange 2 press tour, Olsen explained why she loves playing the character of Scarlet Witch so much.

Olsen seemed to suggest those imperfections are a part of the reason why she loves the Scarlet Witch so much. “It’s not the most fun, in my mind, to always play the hero of a story when they do no wrong. I don’t find that interesting," Olsen said. "I think the reason why I really enjoyed Wanda from the beginning is that she’s very clear in her beliefs. They just don’t align with others, and that’s okay. She'll have her own realizations and admit when she makes mistakes.”

Olsen's comments reveal the room this next MCU phase is leaving for heroes to be able to have flaws and still keep their morality intact - not one person is all good or bad - even superheroes and villains. Scarlet Witch represents a female superhero who is allowed to not only be messy and chaotic but also to be a vulnerable human. She may not always do the right thing, but her intentions are there, and she is willing to show remorse in the face of accountability. Fans don’t have to wait too long to see Olsen make her return as the Scarlet Witch, as Doctor Strange 2 is only weeks away from hitting theaters.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released in theaters on May 6th, 2022.
