The founder and CEO of Frontier Developments, David Braben, has apologized to the Elite Dangerous community for the current shape of the Odyssey DLC. The current issues with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey are the company's "top priority and focus," according to the CEO's post, and hotfixes are set to come out shortly.

Elite Dangerous is a space simulation game originally released in 2014 and its second paid expansion, Odyssey, became available for PC players this month. Unfortunately, as Braben notes in his post on the game's forum, players have experienced bugs, server issues, and performance issues thus far with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey's release.

David Braben's public apology was posted on March 21 and it addresses the community directly impacted by these issues. According to this post, the first hotfix has already released and a second one aimed at addressing the reported bugs and bringing "further stability improvements" is scheduled.

Braben notes that this latter hotfix will be out "very soon" though no specific date is mentioned. One of the more interesting pieces from the post is that Braben shared his setup, explaining how he's been playing the game to experience the issues himself. "I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra," Braben wrote.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey was originally scheduled to come out in 2020 but was delayed twice due to the pandemic and the United Kingdom's restrictions in relation to it. Notably, these delays often don't give game developers extra time to work on their titles as restrictions often make collaboration difficult. It is likely that this next hotfix won't be the last and players should expect continued work on the game in the weeks to come.

The comments on the post on the Elite Dangerous: Odyssey forum seem to be fairly positive despite the reported issues with the game. Often DLC and game releases are accompanied with issues, but even though the number of issues reported was enough to prompt a response from the CEO, the communication seems to have inspired confidence. There are numerous comments thanking Braben for the update and message and it goes to show how important it is to a community that they feel heard.

It isn't all positive responses to Braben's apology, though. There are posts lamenting the issues and looking for more insight into the process in regards to the hotfixes. Either way, Frontier Developments has its work cut out for it to resolve these release issues as soon as possible. For now players must await hotfixes and hope they address the problems they have experienced.

Elite: Dangerous is available now on PC, and coming to PS4 and Xbox One in Fall 2021.
