Frontier Developments, the studio behind Planet Coaster and Elite: Dangerous confirms that its next game will be based on a major Hollywood movie property.

Video games based on movies are often terrible, but when a talented team of developers are working with a property they care about, the results can be tremendous. Hopefully that’s the case with the next game from Frontier Developments, as it’s been confirmed that it will be based on a major Hollywood franchise.

On Monday, the studio confirmed that it had successfully gained the rights to adapt an “enduring movie franchise of global renown,” according to a report from Game Informer. At present, it’s difficult to predict which franchise in particular is being referred to.

“We have chosen to license this particular IP to work with as our third franchise, because we believe we can create something very special,” said the company’s founder, David Braben. “It is creatively stimulating, already has a high worldwide profile, and is a perfect match for our expertise.”

Braben’s confirmation that the property suits the studio’s expertise seems to suggest that its new game will share some similarities with a previous project. In recent years, Frontier Developments has released its space sim Elite: Dangerous and several rollercoaster-themed games including Screamride and the well-received Planet Coaster.

Planet Coaster Review

Of course, it’s easy to name franchises that would lend themselves to a game adaptation along the lines of Elite: Dangerous. There are any number of sci-fi properties that would benefit from the sense of adventure (and mystery) imbued into that particular game.

That being said, Frontier Developments might be preparing to use the basic park builder structure created for Planet Coaster as part of another project. This type of game would seem to be a less likely candidate for an adaptation of a Hollywood film franchise — but there’s a new Jurassic Park film coming out next year, and that property would be a great fit for the genre.

Ultimately, any guesses at the project Braben is teasing are pure speculation, and we won’t know anything for sure until we get some kind of official announcement. Fortunately, Frontier Developments expects to share more details before the end of 2017.

However, any new release from the studio should warrant some excitement, given the pedigree of Elite: Dangerous and Planet Coaster. With any luck, Fronter Developments’ next project should be another addition to the list of genuinely good video games based on movies.
