Elder Scrolls Story in 2 Minutes Video

Considering the amount of gamers who have spent the past few weeks neck-deep in some dragon-slaying with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, confusion over the vast mythology of the series to date is likely at an all-time high. Four sizable chunks of mythology and lore precede the story and characters of Skyrim, but playing through the previous games to truly grasp the quest of the Dragonborn is out of the question. So instead, a video has surfaced online detailing everything a player needs to know, provided they’ve got a few minutes to spare.

We’re not talking about high-brow, stuffy mythology chronicling the ages-old battle between orcs and men that appears in nearly every work of fantasy these days. The series may seem like standard swords and sorcery fare, but anyone who has read a page or two of Skyrim‘s vast book collection knows that Bethesda’s fiction has a sense of humor all its own.

But sitting down and reading the history of Tamriel’s various provinces just isn’t practical when there are dragon souls to be harvested and maidens to be saved, so one group of fans has done the leg work for every-questing Dovahkiin. Behold the necessary story details of the past four games in just over two minutes, in this short summary entitled ‘The Elder Scrolls Lore’:

When the various stories are all laid out in order, it’s amazing to think that many of Skyrim‘s players will be unfamiliar with just how their own adventure fits into the greater saga that is The Elder Scrolls. The latest release has beaten all previous franchise records, both in terms of overall copies sold and Xbox Live activity, so at least as many newcomers as long-time fans are getting their fix of Bethesda’s trademark role-playing, which is an accomplishment in itself.

It’s sad to think that so many players will be oblivious to the rich history of the series, but aside from this informative wrap-up, the presence of both Cyrodiil and Morrowind within Skyrim could mean that future integration is planned. Whether that means a full-on return to past game worlds or a simple nod to series faithful is anyone’s guess, but we can all agree that a strong but simple story lies at the heart of the entire franchise.

The latest scourge to hit Tamriel comes in the form of dragons, so take them on yourself in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 now.
