Consider it official; The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the PC will have mod support much like Morrowind and Oblivion did before it. The modding is made possible through Bethesda releasing a toolset for the game. The toolset, called the Creation Kit, will give PC gamers almost limitless modding possibilities as seen in previous franchise installments.

While Bethesda has a great track record for supporting and encouraging modding of their games by releasing toolsets, getting official confirmation this far in advance of the game's release is sure to make many PC gamers and modders happy. After all, just because a game or series used to provide feature the PC-gaming crowd loved and supported does not necessarily mean it will continue to going forward.

The Call of Duty franchise certainly ran into the problem some regarding custom servers. More recently, Battlefield 3 has also taken some heat from PC gamers for being a PC and console game.

While it is hard to always make everyone happy, Bethesda is certainly looking to do its part. When questions popped up on the official Bethesda forums discussing the moddability of Skyrim, and whether or not it would be supported, Bethesda chimed in to set the record straight:

"[w]e've always been impressed with what the community has done with our tools. Like the Elder Scrolls Construction Set for Morrowind and Oblivion, we plan to release the Creation Kit so you guys can mod Skyrim."

Sure a lot of gamers will likely play Skyrim on the Xbox 360 or the PS3 and, therefore, never experience any aspect of the Creation Kit but developer-supported modding remains an important part of gaming culture.
