E3 is only weeks away now and one of the hottest games on the busy expo floor will undoubtedly by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, one of our most anticipated games of 2011.

The first public demonstration of Skyrim happened recently at theĀ Bethesda BFG event where they demo’d the title for press and some footage of what was shown is available online, depicting some of the environments and creatures we’ve only seen through screenshots so far.

Metacafe was on hand at the event and put up a brief 1-minute video, describing what was shown and including some video of the beautiful locales of the latest Elder Scrolls installment. What stands out from the in-game footage is how the environments look and feel much more real and detailed. It feels like there’s life in the brief villages we see of the player character walking down a street and the mountainous and forest regions look just as impressive.

You’ll also note some very cool special effects and gameplay as the player dual wields a sword and staff:

Seeing this video makes me happy that I won’t be restricted by choosing a character class, because I think I’ll find myself needing to try out everything, from melee combat to magic.

I’ve pulled out 8 screenshots from the gameplay footage, but a lot of it may have been what you’ve seen before. Unfortunately, the actual demonstration playthrough has not been released so we may have to wait until E3 for a better look at Bethesda’s next fantasy RPG and what changes they’re brining to the Elder Scrolls franchise.

It’s certainly the game I’m looking forward to most this fall and I hope the vast changes in RPG elements and gameplay don’t dumb it down, but instead offer a more in-depth single player experience. Bring on the dragons!
