The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and DOOM have something unusual in common; players can't seem to stop finding new ways to play the games on odd systems and hardware. Whether displaying Skyrim on a pregnancy test or playing a game within a game by putting DOOM in Minecraft, fans get a lot of enjoyment out of putting the games onto systems or hardware they were never intended to be used on.

Of course, not every one of these has to be a technological challenge. One player has now shown others what it looks like when Skyrim is played on an old-school CRT monitor, a piece of technology that was outdated even when Skyrim first released.

These days, Skyrim looks its best in VR or on ultra high resolution monitors, letting players see the world of Tamriel in all its glory. But a CRT monitor is still perfectly capable of displaying the game, too. Skyrim fan Cliffworms on Reddit shared an image of their CRT monitor playing Skyrim, with what appears to be an archer Khajit player character standing in the frame.

Getting the most out of a high-end GPU requires display equipment to match, which this CRT monitor obviously isn't capable of. Cliffworms mentions that the feed is coming from a relatively modern computer, which still had the correct port needed to hook up the monitor on its older motherboard. The CRT can definitely display Skyrim, but it wouldn't be the most enjoyable experience for the player.

However, it's worth noting that just because CRT monitors are older technology doesn't mean that they don't have a place in the gaming sphere, even now. While preservation of older games is extremely important, many players have noted that games of the 1990s often don't look as good as they once did when played on flat screen TVs. Modern HD flat screen TVs and monitors display images differently than CRTs did, making some pixelated games appear fuller and crisper on CRTs than modern screens. As such, CRT monitors and TVs are in demand by some players who want to replicate the original experience as much as possible.

Skyrim is too recent a game to benefit from a CRT monitor, but it's not the worst it's looked, either. Players have found ways to play Skyrim on some truly bizarre equipment, assuming that they want visuals at all. Skyrim on Alexa was played entirely via voice commands and with verbal descriptions. If players want to enjoy Skyrim, the opportunities to do so are truly endless.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
