The Elder Scrolls Online has been around for seven years now, with no sign of going away. Now, Sony has announced fans of The Elder Scrolls Online can expect a new version of the game for the PlayStation 5 called The Elder Scrolls Online: Console Enhanced.

The Elder Scrolls Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that began development shortly after the success of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The Elder Scrolls Online allowed players to further explore the fictional continent of Tamriel. Though Elder Scrolls Online had a rocky initial release, the game has gone on to received generally favorable reviews, with a few shortfalls common to the MMORPG genre noted. Still, The Elder Scrolls Online has many fans and a strong community with a high level of engagement.

This community will likely expand with PlayStation’s announcement via Twitter that The Elder Scrolls Online will be coming to PlayStation 5. The announcement was accompanied with a trailer, showing off several enhancements that have been made to take advantage of the PS5’s extra horsepower, mainly graphical. The PlayStation 5 version will have improved ambient occlusion, better textures, enhanced anti-aliasing and advanced lighting, with this version of The Elder Scrolls Online is set for release on June 8, 2021.

With The Elder Scrolls Online recently being announced as the most popular multi-platform MMORPG, it is no surprise that Bethesda would want to expand its reach. There have been 18 million Elder Scrolls Online players over the game's run, a number certain to increase with its impending release on PlayStation 5. However, The Elder Scrolls Online is just one among a long line of online multiplayer games releasing on PlayStation 5. Final Fantasy 14, Destiny 2, No Man’s Sky, and Warframe are all either available for PlayStation 5 already or landing soon.

Fans of The Elder Scrolls Online, especially the rare few who have managed to get a hold of the elusive PlayStation 5, will likely be pleased with this announcement. The enhancements appear to make a huge difference based on the trailer.

However, there are likely veterans of the game who might feel frustrated, as new releases typically come with an influx in fresh players. Many fans will be excited to see the new faces join in on exploring Tamriel, but there are some who might find the newer players an annoyance.

Elder Scrolls Online: Console Enhanced will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X starting June 8, 2021.
