While Skyrim may have made its way to just about every device on the market, it's unlikely that Elder Scrolls fans will be getting an official remaster of the third entry in the Elder Scrolls franchise, Morrowind, anytime soon, according to everybody's favorite Game Director Todd Howard.

When questioned about the possibility of a remaster of the fantasy epic, Howard was dismissive, stating, "For Skyrim Remastered, we had done some work on it but it was already pretty visually close. But for something like Morrowind, my personal preference is not to remaster it." Howard also explained that he preferred fans playing the backward compatible versions of Bethesda's older games, as the age of the title is "part of its identity."

Howard was equally dismissive of the possibility of a Fallout 1 remaster, asserting once more that fans could already play the game in its intended state if they had a PC and that he felt that's "how it should be".

While this is a bummer for fans that wish to play the game but aren't willing to put up with the dated graphics and antiquated menu systems, there are still plenty of options out there to enjoy more modern versions of the older entries into the Elder Scrolls franchise, mostly thanks to the work of modders. There are plenty of fan made mods out there that help rejuvenate games like Morrowind by upgrading graphics and modernizing game systems. Not to mention mods like Skywind, a massive undertaking by a group of modders seeking to recreate Morrowind in Skyrim's game engine, something that would effectively be the same as a remaster.

While official remakes won't be happening anytime soon, Bethesda fans still have plenty to be excited for on the horizon. The developer announced a plethora of new titles at their E3 conference this year, including both The Elder Scrolls 6 and the mobile Elder Scrolls: Blades game, the latter of which will be available later this year. While it may be a few years before the bigger titles actually release, Howard urged fans to be patient, finally stating that "It’s gonna take a while for what we have in mind to come out.”

The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind is available now on PC and Xbox One backward compatibility.
