Despite confirming The Elder Scrolls 6 at E3 2016, Bethesda’s vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines states that the title is currently not in development.
Bethesda Game Studios’s Skyrim has been nothing short of a massive success, and with over 20 million copies sold since its release in 2011, it was almost certain that a follow-up title was going to happen at some point. Bethesda ultimately confirmed The Elder Scrolls 6 during its E3 2016 showcase, although no details were revealed about what to expect from the game. But if a new tweet by Bethesda’s VP of PR and marketing, Pete Hines, is to be believed, it looks like fans will be waiting for quite a while before a return to Tamriel is on the cards.
In a recent Twitter exchange, Hines was asked by a gamer whether Bethesda’s two unannounced projects would take focus away from The Elder Scrolls 6, only to reply that the development team aren’t currently working on the title at the moment.
Hines’ tweet isn’t entirely clear, and “we aren’t working on TES6 at the moment” could mean a number of things. There’s the possibility that while full production on The Elder Scrolls 6 isn’t underway yet, pre-production work has commenced on the title. Pre-production on a game often begins well before full production gets underway, so it is possible that some work has been done for the upcoming Elder Scrolls game, although this has not been confirmed by Hines.
While a new Elder Scrolls entry is still quite a long way off, players will get the chance to revisit Tamriel later this year when the upcoming Skyrim: Special Edition is released. Announced alongside The Elder Scrolls 6 at E3, this remaster of Skyrim will feature a number of graphical upgrades and extra features, such as mod support on consoles. With Bethesda aiming for the Skyrim remaster to be a “next-gen” experience, perhaps this will give everyone an idea into what to expect for the next Elder Scrolls entry.
For those wanting a new adventure through Tamriel that doesn’t involve revisiting Skyrim, there’s an ambitious modding project titled Beyond Skyrim to look forward to. Developed as a large multi-team modding project, this fan-made expansion aims to include all of Tamriel, and will bring at least six new locations to the world of Skyrim. While a release date has not yet been announced for this mod, it is almost certain that players will be able to get their hands on Beyond Skyrim before The Elder Scrolls 6 is released.
The Elder Scrolls 6 has been confirmed, but development has not yet commenced. We’ll keep you posted on any news and announcements regarding the game.
