Since launch, Elden Ring has received a number of updates that have finished quest lines, better-balanced weapons, made some QoL improvements, and more. Some of these changes were quite welcomed, like the NPC markers on the Elden Ring map, while others were small and hidden like the duo boss changes.

SPOILERS FOR ELDEN RING AHEADBig and small, there has been all manner of updates, including to the capital of Leyndell. For example, one update removed the use of fire from Morgott’s intro cutscene in the area, but it seems Leyndell could have been iterated upon time and again, right up until launch.

One YouTuber known as Sekiro Dubi has apparently been playing the 1.0 version of Elden Ring – the version that shipped with no updates. Many wouldn’t think about not updating the game, but doing so had led to major discoveries in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and now Elden Ring. Specifically, while the area of Leyndell looks identical, there were a ton of changes to the enemies that occupied the area.

The updated version of Leyndell has been recaptured, from a previous battle, by Golden Order loyals, but the 1.0 version sees several more Crucible and Banished Knights in the capital. Some even appear to be worshipping the body of Gransax, the dragon players climb throughout the capital. Oracle Envoys, who are said to appear when heralding a new age, are nowhere to be seen either. And finally, Morgott the Omen King bears the name Prince of the Omen instead.

This has led some to believe that this shipped version of Leyndell would have taken place earlier in the game’s timeline, while many were still battling for control of the city before Morgott did. Morgott seeks to defend the Erdtree and his family, even though he is an Omen, and this ties heavily to the story. After defeating him, players will adventure out and find a way to burn the Erdtree, heralding in the new age and eventually facing the first two Elden Lords – Godfrey and Radagon.

Overall, the game has a ton of cut or changed content that begs more questions than answers. There appears to be a cut prologue where players fought under Godfrey outside The Lands Between, before the Tarnished return. The timeline of Elden Ring is nowhere near exact, but it’s interesting how much has changed throughout the game’s various updates.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
