Not all boss fights in Elden Ring are created equally, and where players might expect an epic clash against a mighty foe, they sometimes get an ending that makes all the tension in the boss arena fizzle out spectacularly. It would be a lie to say that Elden Ring was a surprise hit when it came out in February this year, but few could have possibly imagined it would achieve this level of popularity. Even though FromSoftware was already a household name with its Dark Souls franchise, Elden Ring made the Japanese developer legendary, as it sold over 16 million copies by July.

The biggest draw of Elden Ring was the simple mission it aimed to accomplish: the coexistence of open world in the Soulslike subgenre. FromSoftware had ample knowledge and experience in crafting memorable, tense, unforgiving boss fights – but the team was a stranger to the concept of open world, and in order to succeed in redefining the genre yet again, its first foray had to be good. It ended up being great. The launch saw players immerse themselves in the dangerous Lands Between, penned by famous fantasy author George R. R. Martin, and the game breathed some much-needed life into an open world concept that was starting to get rather stale.

Amidst all these different bosses and areas, Elden Ring players could come across two optional fights against a Magma Wyrm – one at the very end of Gael Tunnel, and the other south of Fort Laiedd. The Magma Wyrm is a fierce lesser dragon wielding a fiery curved blade, but the one met by Next-Plastic-190 had decided to use it rather unconventionally. With Next-Plastic-190 perched up on the cliffs above the boss, the Magma Wyrm swung itself with the blade in an attempt to engage, only to stumble across the edge of the area and fall into the chasm below.

The sheer absurdity of the Magma Wyrm's final attempt to save its dignity made Next-Plastic-190's post very popular on the Elder Ring subreddit, especially with the juxtaposition of the iconic "Great Enemy Felled" screen popping up after the lesser dragon's comical demise. Players should make no mistake, though – the health remaining on this Elden Ring boss before its cartwheel onto doom was low, and so Next-Plastic-190's kill was well-earned.

Though FromSoftware has been tightlipped about the direction of Elden Ring's DLCs, many players speculate that the next focus for the game will be better and larger Player vs. Player arenas. Until then, the base experience of Elden Ring still has plenty to offer, be it dramatic and cathartic, or comedic and anti-climatic.

Elden Ring is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
