After years of waiting, Elden Ring fans have finally received a brand-new trailer for the game. The Elden Ring trailer served as a thrilling show closer for Summer Game Fest, and it turns out that director Hidetaka Miyazaki requested personally that it be the show closer.

Geoff Keighley had been messing with fans for the past few days about some major news, with an Elden Ring trailer teaser coming as early as this morning. Fortunately, those teasers turned out to be more than some playful trolling, as Keighley closed the show by presenting the highly anticipated gameplay trailer. While the footage itself looks incredible and certainly lives up to the hype, the story behind the trailer itself seems to be equally interesting.

In a Tweet after the event, Keighley personally thanked developer FromSoftware for giving him the chance to re-reveal the game. Clearly appreciative of having the honor to show the game during the event, the Summer Game Fest host detailed how it was decided that Elden Ring would go on last. While it could have easily been a show opener that helped kick things off on the right note, Miyazaki was adamant that Keighley should use the trailer to bring Summer Game Fest to a close. As for his reasoning, the legendary developer wanted to help “elevate” everything else at the show.

Keighley called Miyazaki a “true class act” due to this request, and given this insight, that certainly seems like a fitting description of the man. Had Elden Ring come on first, many may have stopped watching Summer Game Fest, ignoring all the games and developers that came on to talk after the show. With anticipation for Elden Ring already at its peak, Miyazaki and From Software wanted to help extend that hype to all the other projects at the event. Given just how many gamers around the world were tuning in, it seems like this strategy has turned out to be a success.

On top of giving his fellow developers a boost, Miyazaki wanted to “reward” Elden Ring fans for watching through the entire event, a nice sentiment that should be appreciated by most. When fans finally got to see the game in action, it should have been even more exciting due to all the waiting that had gone on beforehand. With the trailer bringing the grotesque creature design, intense combat, and open field areas fans had been hoping to see, it has likely checked all the right boxes for FromSoftware’s fan base.

While FromSoftware easily could have tried to steal the show, it instead gave that spotlight to other developers. With this in mind, the long-awaited Elden Ring trailer has become even more special, as it was used for far more than just hyping up the game itself.

Elden Ring launches January 21, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
