The leaks have proven true as Elden Ring, the dark fantasy RPG made in partnership between From Software and George R.R. Martin, was announced on-stage during Xbox's E3 2019 press conference. Elden Ring was revealed with a cinematic announcement trailer filled with dark imagery including battling armored foes, blacksmiths, mages, and a haunting narrator warning us about the shattering of the Elden Ring.

Few hints are provided to the nature of Elden Ring in the short cinematic trailer. The Elden Ring, an important item within the game's universe, is said to have "commanded the stars" and "given life its fullest brilliance." The Elden Ring, however, has been shattered. The trailer shows a character, perhaps the players, smashing what's assumed to be the Elden Ring with a hammer. As the ring is destroyed, so shatters the character's body. From Software's rich dark fantasy background is at play once more.

A partnership between George R.R. Martin, the writer of the A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy books series, and From Software, developers of the Dark Souls franchise, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, has long been rumored. But the rumor has always sounded too good to be true. A leak from this past Friday confirmed those rumors, after publisher Bandai Namco accidentally pushed live information about the game leading up to E3. The partnership is real and the product is Elden Ring.

The Elden Ring game is confirmed to be an action RPG alike in nature to From Software's previous work. It's once again directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. All that's said about the game itself is that "Danger and discovery lurk around every corner." It's not much, but it's something.

Unfortunately for everyone, little to no further information about Elden Ring has been shared. It's not clear if Elden Ring is intended for release on Xbox One or PS4, or if it's not going to arrive until the next generation of consoles in 2020. It's not clear what kind of gameplay to expect, though From Software certainly has a brand of action to its name. It's going to be an excruciating wait for more information, but that only goes to prove how exciting it is to know about From Software's next game.

Elden Ring is in development for PC and Xbox One.
