An Elden Ring fan who recently started a playthrough of Final Fantasy VII Remake noticed more than a few similarities between two significant characters from each title. Malenia and Sephiroth have both manifested a considerable degree of fame among the gaming community and, upon closer inspection, it seems that the Elden Ring swordstress and Final Fantasy antagonist have many parallels.

At a glance, any resemblance between Elden Ring and Final Fantasy VII Remake begins and ends with the fact that they are both role-playing games. The latter was an exclusive PlayStation title, still not on Xbox despite a PC release last year, whereas Elden Ring was released on all platforms but the Nintendo Switch. Outside of differences in availability, they each approach the role-playing genre in a wholly divergent manner, as Elden Ring's open-world contrasts significantly with the ostensibly guided and linear experience that FF7 Remake delivers.

However, beyond the near opposite styles of storytelling and stark distinctions regarding combat, one fan has abstracted characteristics from a prominent figure of both, revealing them to reflect each other in over half a dozen ways. A post uploaded to Reddit by FemRevan64 pictures Malenia and Sephiroth side by side, followed by a list of 8 similarities shared between the two fighters. Even just by viewing their respective images, no doubt chosen as a means of mirroring them, a couple of comparisons can be drawn.

Both boasting "long [and] flowing hair," and equipped with "a katana that's taller than them," it is interesting that the congruence does not finish at aesthetic. Malenia, as she loves reminding the player of, has never known defeat, and Sephiroth too is held up as an impossibly skilled warrior. Although their performances differ in scope, both Malenia and Sephiroth exude stoicism, barely ever raising their voices in the heat of battle or due to heightened emotions. Both not only include a second phase to each boss fight, but use angelic imagery, spreading at least a single wing to become the Goddess of Rot and One-Wing Angel.

Furthermore, Malenia and Sephiroth have been subjected to some form of eldritch manipulation while in the womb, with the former infected by Scarlet Rot and the latter experimented on using Jenova cells. As players will be able to witness in the upcoming release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, Sephiroth is known to be charismatic and beloved by those under his command, qualities shared with Malenia, knowledge gleaned from Elden Ring's obscure lore. Finally, each character's nemesis wields a "big thick sword," referring to the ravenous Starscourge Radahn, and adored Final Fantasy protagonist Cloud Strife.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
