Elden Ring is less than two months away from its February 24 release date, and anticipation is building to a peak. Listening to online fans of From Software's games, one might think Elden Ring is the most anticipated game of 2022. But the truth seems, or at least has been, that From Software fans are just rather vocal. As evidence, Steam's list of its most wishlisted upcoming games has featured Dying Light 2 at the top for some time. That's now changed, however, with Elden Ring attaining the top spot.

As of January 8, for the first time ever, Elden Ring is now the most wishlisted upcoming game on Steam. Valve provides a list of the most wishlisted upcoming games releasing on Steam, now showing Elden Ring at the top. Valve doesn't provide hard data on the wishlisting numbers, unfortunately, so all that can be assumed is that Elden Ring's numbers climbed higher than Dying Light 2 overnight.

This is an exciting shift, if only because Elden Ring has never been at the top of this list. The top position has been held by Dying Light 2 for the entirety of 2021, a spot it gained only after the release of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020. That's not to say that excitement for Dying Light 2 has faded, by any means, but it does imply that excitement for Elden Ring is spiking in the run-up to its launch.

While Valve doesn't publish the exact numbers of wishlisters for each upcoming game, SteamDB does have a similar list. It doesn't seem to line up exactly with Valve's placements, but it seems close. According to these numbers, Elden Ring has seen rapid growth over the past several days and gained nearly 10,000 wishlists over the past week. Dying Light 2, in comparison, has gained nearly 3,000 wishlists. In total, Elden Ring has 273,000 wishlists and Dying Light 2 has 251,000.

As for what may have led to the rapid increase in wishlists for Elden Ring on Steam, it's anyone's guess. From Software has been in the news a bit, but not in a major capacity. Still, there's news that From Software is working on a new Armored Core game, as well as new Elden Ring leaks going around. Both could have contributed to the spike.

What it likely comes down to, however, is one simple thing. People are looking forward to the first wave of big game releases of 2022, and Elden Ring in particular is very highly anticipated. That excitement is likely to continue growing up until launch, on Steam and elsewhere.

Elden Ring releases February 25 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
