Following Sony's "Future of Gaming" livestream last month, Microsoft is preparing to show off Halo Infinite gameplay at an Xbox Series X event on July 23. The promise of a larger showcase for the next-generation console's offerings has fans excited to hear more about a number of announced games, however VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb suggests anyone hoping to hear about FromSoftware's Elden Ring should temper their expectations.

Earlier this week, Xbox Head Phil Spencer made many believe Elden Ring news was coming because of comments that Xbox is working on building stronger relationships with Japanese game developers, directly referencing Elden Ring's announcement at E3 2019. Grubb took to Twitter today with an apprehensive reaction to various news sites reporting on this potential showcase saying, "There's a better chance of a Bakugan than Elden Ring on Thursday."

This is in reference to the announcement of Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia for Switch on July 10, a now-infamous example of social media heightening its expectations for what many saw as a mediocre reveal. Originally, Nintendo had promised a game from a new licensed IP being developed by WayForward to coincide with its Paper Mario: The Origami King Treehouse livestream, but later had to confirm it was not a Nintendo property after titles like Wario Land began trending on Twitter.

While this comment by Grubb is not a guarantee that Elden Ring will not appear at the Xbox Series X event, it is safe to assume his insight holds water in the discussion. FromSoftware fans who are looking forward to hearing more about the developer's crossover with George R. R. Martin may be disappointed, especially as rumors that trademark troubles may be behind the lack of Elden Ring news, but Microsoft's event should still offer a lot to look forward to.

In the lead-up to Thursday's event, the Xbox Series X has received attention through other avenues as well. The Coalition showed off Gears 5 on the Xbox Series X during the Inside Unreal livestream last week, and PS5 exclusive titles like Lucid Games' Destruction AllStars have similarly been showing off the power of next-generation consoles.

Even if Elden Ring does not appear on Thursday, more news will have to be shared about the long-anticipated action RPG eventually. In the meantime, FromSoftware fans can also look forward to the remake of Demon's Souls coming to PlayStation 5.

Elden Ring is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
