Two months on and much of the gaming world is still reeling from the might that is FromSoftware's Elden Ring. With its stunning visuals, "Soulsborn" quality that already has a huge following, and it being created in conjunction with George R. R. Martin, it's perhaps not too surprising that it's gone down as one of the highest rated video games in all of history. However, one fan has decided they want to see what this modern action title would look like if it was given a more retro look.

Turning the clock back a number of decades, user shintendo has uploaded a brief clip to YouTube which shows what appears to be a game from a Nintendo Game Boy. However, what this actually is is a fan "demake" of Elden Ring, which reimagines it as a 2D monochrome game. Currently, this is just a teaser, but the developer has said that they hope to at least finish Limgrave by the end of May with the possibility of extending it to include more of the original.

Released in 1989, the Game Boy is one of the most revolutionary handheld gaming consoles ever made. It gave Nintendo, who were already making waves in the industry thanks to the NES, the platform to conquer the portable games market. The light gray system sold more than 118 million units up until it was discontinued in 2003, had numerous iterations such as the Game Boy Advance, and was where Tetris began its life. The fact that shintendo is making their own version of Elden Ring that befits the ancient handheld device shows just how much of a legacy it left in its wake.

It also shows how much fan demakes are in vogue at the moment. There are numerous projects of independent developers turning modern games into something that looks like it belongs in a bygone era. Lilith's Bloodborne PSX is one notable example. In fact, there's also another fan demake of Elden Ring, or at least a concept video showing what it would look like as a PS1 title rather than a PS5 or PS4 one.

As for the official game itself, fans have been dodging and hacking their way through the Lands Between since February 25, to such an extent that people are finishing the game at breakneck speeds. Recent speedrunners have been completing Elden Ring in less than nine minutes, which goes to show how dedicated the running community is. As for shintendo's project, it looks like it could be an interesting take on the FromSoftware title once it finally releases.

Elden Ring is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
