Like any other FromSoftware game, a majority of the Elden Ring story is told through item descriptions, environmental details, and hints from dialogue. For those that take the time to watch lore videos or piece together the Elden Ring narrative themselves, Morgott proves to be a particularly interesting character.

One of the few FromSoftware bosses that has a rematch with the player, Margit’s transformation into Morgott is memorable, as is the magic-focused fight that comes as a result of this change. However, the Morgott intro cutscene has been changed, seemingly intentionally by FromSoftware. While no justification has been provided as to why, Reddit user Razhork went out of their way to provide a comparison between Patch 1.02 and 1.04, showing just how noticeable the change is.

Morgott’s Altered Cutscene

While the cutscene features the same dialogue and camera angles, the main difference spotlighted by the Elden Ring community is Morgott’s sword. In the original cutscene, Morgott lights his blade on fire as soon as he mentions the Flame of Ambition, placing more emphasis on the dialogue and making his weapon’s transformation fancier. In the new version of this cinematic, though, the fiery cracks that spread across Morgott’s blade are completely gone, with the character simply crushing his sword instead. Overall, this makes the transformation a good bit less flashy, though fans have been quick to suggest some possible justifications for the updated cutscene.

Theories Behind The Morgott Cutscene Change

While there is a chance that this change was accidental and is simply another Elden Ring bug, that seems unlikely. Assuming it is an intentional change, fans have been debating about why the adjustment was made. While Reddit user Nozerone joked that Morgott could not afford the fuel for the sword, a nod to real life gas prices skyrocketing, others had some more serious theories about the fire’s removal.

Redditor datssyck argued that the change was because of the game’s lore, as flame is heresy in the Golden Order. With Morgott being the Scion of the Golden Order, he would likely never wield it, as his character arc hinges on his loyalty. A different justification for the change came from Reddit user TimmyAndStuff, who felt the new version of the scene makes more sense since no fire attacks are used until Morgott’s second phase. This could have been confusing to players that expected fire attacks right from the get-go, as they do not actually have to avoid or negate this type of damage until later on. Morgott only using the fire as a last resort during the second phase of the battle suits his character, too, as he would surely not want to lead with such an attack.

Regardless of which theory is correct, this Elden Ring change is fascinating. When future updates happen, fans of the game may want to check out some other boss cutscenes to look for similar adjustments. In the case of Morgott, the 1.04 version of the cinematic does seem to work better, regardless of whether players are looking to gameplay or lore as the justification for the new version.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
