Elden Ring was announced in 2019 at E3 and since then fans of the Souls series have been eagerly awaiting FromSoftware’s next masterpiece. It has been 2 years, but Elden Ring news updates are still few and far between.
A few days ago, there was a supposed six second internal trailer for Elden Ring leaked online. The trailer was said to showcase various environments and included a confidentiality warning watermark. When this news broke, there was no substantial confirmation that the leak was genuine. However, the quality of the work, and the previously leaked trailers for Elden Ring left many fans believing in its legitimacy.
However, a Reddit user by the name of Blue_Affinity has exposed the leak as a fake. The user posted several hours ago in the Elden Ring subreddit with a link to an artist’s portfolio. The artist in question was Jack Phan, a 3D Concept Artist who initially posted the “trailer” as a thesis presentation inspired by FromSoftware’s Souls series. Phan did all the modelling, texturing, and lighting work featured in the piece. It is uncertain where the claims that the video was an Elden Ring leak originated, but the artist has stated that he is "flattered" people were convinced it was genuine.
VGC reported in a now removed section of its article on the leak that it was originally found on a 4Chan forum. It appears a 4chan user altered the footage and added a confidential notice to repurpose to footage as a fake leak. This fake footage comes after the assumed real leak in March, where an entire Elden Ring trailer was leaked and then scaled to high definition by eager fans.
Fans of FromSoftware and Miyazaki’s other games will surely be disappointed to find out this current leak is not real. It has been a long time since the developer has given any new information on Elden Ring. While FromSoftware has recently revealed to investors that it is planning to release the game by the end of March 2022, these claims still have not been brought to the public officially and may be subject to change. Given the circumstances, it is understandable why fans may be getting antsy.
Still, though tensions are rising among some, many other fans have been understanding of the delay in the release. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on many production schedules and Elden Ring’s is one of those. For those fans patiently waiting, there is hope that fans will see some Elden Ring news at this year's E3, which kicks off in roughly a month.
