While most FromSoftware games offer a handful of different endings, Elden Ring apparently has six (that fans know of). These include the Age of Fracture, the Age of Order, the Age of the Curse, the Age of the Stars, the Age of the Duskborn, and of course the Age of Chaos brought on by the Lord of Chaos.

The Frenzied Flame ending is the only Elden Ring ending that overwrites the others, removing players' choice of ending entirely at the end of the game. Once you have discovered the Three Fingers and allowed it to burn your body, there's only two major directions to go - to the Giants' Forge to use the Flame of Ruin yourself, or to the Haligtree to rid yourself of this inheritance.

Updated July 30, 2022 by Erik Petrovich: While there are only two major paths after inheriting the Frenzied Flame Elden Ring offers, there is a third, side road to take too. Hyetta is a Finger Maiden searching for her destiny, revealed to her through glimpses given by Shabriri Grapes. As the future Lord of Chaos, players who have inherited the Frenzied Flame can receive a special item from her only after being touched by the Three Fingers. For the Lord of Chaos ending Elden Ring doesn't let players opt out unless they progress a different questline and beat two of the game's hardest bosses. The Elden Ring Frenzied Flame ending is arguably the worst outcome for the Lands Between, but that doesn't matter as long as Melina is alive, right?

The Frenzied Flame Reveals How To Burn The Erdtree Without Sacrifice

Elden Ring Frenzied Flame Guide Burn The Erdtree

The Forge of the Giants is home to the Flame of Ruin, which can be used to burn the Erdtree. Normally, this requires the sacrifice of a maiden, but if you inherit the Frenzied Flame you can spare Melina and burn the Erdtree yourself. Melina doesn't take too kindly to this gesture, though, and threatens to kill you upon resting at a Site of Grace after meeting the Three Fingers.

The Giant's Forge and the Flame of Ruin are found at the end of the Mountaintops of Giants, which can only be accessed after defeating Morgott and acquiring the Rold Medallion to activate the lift. If you manage to un-inherit the Frenzied Flame before using the Flame of Ruin, Melina will need to be sacrificed as normal.

If you're going to inherit the Frenzied Flame and bring the world to ruin, you might as well do it with the most powerful gear available. Fortunately, there is one Madness-related item that can only be acquired by the future Lord of Chaos: the Frenzied Flame Seal. This Seal, used for Incantations, increases Frenzied Flame spell damage by a massive 20%. There are of course other items that are perfectly suited for the Lord of Chaos Elden Ring players can find, like Vyke's War Spear, but the Frenzied Flame Seal is the only one directly tied to having inherited the Frenzied Flame itself.

Throughout Hyetta's questline, players find her in various locations throughout Liurnia. Each time, she can be given a Shabriri Grape to lead her on her path. At the end of Hyetta's questline, she finds her way to the Three Fingers in the Frenzied Flame Proscription. Talking to her after inheriting the Flame of Frenzy, and exhausting her dialogue, rewards players with this powerful Incantation-boosting Seal and completes her questline.

For instance, if a player has unlocked the Age of the Stars and the Age of the Duskborn endings then two options to select a mending rune will be available after beating the Elden Beast. If you don't relinquish yourself of the Frenzied Flame, though, these options are no longer available as you are doomed to herald an Age of Chaos and burn the world down to cinders.

...But If You Want A Different Ending, Inheritance Can Be Undone

Being held in the thrall of the Three Fingers and the Frenzied Flame isn't the end of the world – well, it is, but there's one way to avoid becoming the catalyst for the apocalypse. By following Millicent's questline to the Haligtree and defeating Malenia, players gain the ability to use Miquella's Needle to remove the Frenzied Flame.

There are a lot of steps required to undo inheriting the Frenzied Flame. To start this quest, look for Millicent in Caelid's Church of the Plague and get both halves of the Secret Haligtree Medallion to gain access to the Consecrated Snowfield. After using the Flame of Ruin to burn the Erdtree yourself and defeating Malenia, there's just a secret boss fight in Crumbling Farum Azula between you and becoming a normal Tarnished once again.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
