Officially announced during the Microsoft E3 2019 press conference, Elden Ring is a forthcoming From Software game and a collaboration between Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, the author whose A Song of Fire and Ice series acted as the foundation for Game of Thrones. Since the Elden Ring announcement, Miyazaki has been forthcoming in speaking about his admiration of Martin's work, and the From Software president has even revealed the title of his favorite George R.R. Martin novel.

Speaking with Xbox Wire, Miyazaki professes his love for the A Song of Fire and Ice series as well as Tuf Voyaging, a collection of connected short fiction pieces that Martin began publishing in 1976. However, the Elden Ring director suggests that these are not his favorites amongst Martin's works, saying that, if he had to pick his best-loved George R.R. Martin book, it would be Fevre Dream.

Fevre Dream is a vampire novel that was released in 1982, and it was nominated for both the Locus Award and World Fantasy Award in 1983. Miyazaki states that he considers the book "as a masterpiece among vampire fantasy," and he even indicates that he "had previously recommended it to all new employees." Interestingly, it was this voiced respect for Martin and his work that led to the collaboration on the RPG-focused Elden Ring.

Specifically, Miyazaki indicates that Eiichi Nakajima, the executive business director at From Software, reached out to George R.R. Martin because the Elden Ring director was "such a known fan" of his work. While From Software did not expect much to come of this initial contact, a meeting with Martin was set, and this laid the groundwork for the collaboration on Elden Ring. Of this collaboration it is said that Martin wrote "the overarching mythos for the game world itself."

For many, a collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin may seem like a dream come true, and Miyazaki's reverence for the writer certainly builds a compelling narrative for this alliance. While it is currently unknown exactly how the efforts of Miyazaki and Martin will materialize, it has been said that Elden Ring is the largest From Software game to date, which means that players should be able to spend a significant amount of time in the world they have created.

Elden Ring is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
