From Software's new game with Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin, Elden Ring, will have more RPG gameplay than Dark Souls. In a new interview about the game, developer Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed how different the game is from the Dark Souls trilogy as well as the studio's new release, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Speaking to Xbox about Elden Ring, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki said that the team "wanted to create a new dark fantasy action RPG full of things that we weren’t able to do in the Dark Souls series." Describing the game as a "third-person action RPG," the developer also explained that while Sekiro has a "heavy focus on action," in Elden Ring it's the RPG elements that will take centre stage.

This approach has been done to give players more control over the game and their character. Elden Ring will also have character customization, confirms the developer, and there will be a "wide variety of weapons, magic, and ways to engage enemies" so that players can create their own playstyle. This also means that compared to the gameplay in the Dark Souls games, Elden Ring will offer "more variety in the ways for players to overcome challenges and tweak their tactics when facing enemies."

Miyazaki also suggested that Elden Ring will have an open-world. The developer said that Elden Ring is an open world but explained that while there are many definitions of the term, the development team "tried our own approach to a game with a large, open field to play in." There will be "intricately designed, multi-layered castles," confirmed Miyazaki. From Software has also said that Elden Ring is the biggest game the developer has created and players can expect "many places" for them to explore when it is released.

Fans of From Software and those who have now put Elden Ring on their wishlists after seeing that reveal trailer will be happy to hear Miyazaki reveal more about the game. However, there is still much more than hasn't been confirmed. A leak ahead of E3 2019 offered up more information about what the Elden Ring is and how it's used for power and that the game is set in a 100-year civil war. Miyazaki and the team at From Software aren't talking about any of that just yet, but the information fans do have may leave many wanting to hear more.

Elden Ring is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
