Elden Ring receives the Game of the Year award from the Japan Game Awards, a show taking place as part of TGS 2022. It is no secret that Elden Ring has been one of the more notable releases of 2022 to many gamers. Receiving amazing sales figures and critical praise, many believed even in the first few months of this year that Elden Ring should be crowned game of the year. The game comes from acclaimed developer FromSoftware, previously known for the Dark Souls trilogy and other hits like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Elden Ring marks FromSoftware's first attempt into a truly open world title, letting players roam the Lands Between in any way they want, with as few restrictions as possible. Elden Ring's stellar reviews have praised everything from the atmosphere and narrative set up in that open world, to the lore crafted by series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, to the difficult combat that proves both incredibly frustrating and rewarding.

All of these factors combined to make what many would consider 2022's game of the year. Now, the Japan Game Awards have recognized Elden Ring as such an impressive title. The awards show first began in 1996, and has been celebrating achievements in gaming since. FromSoftware took home the Grand Award, which equates to the Japan Game Awards' Game of the Year. The Elden Ring developer then posted about the win on Twitter, thanking its community for playing.

Fans in the comments of FromSoftware's Twitter post congratulated the company on its win, but followed by requesting some form of news on Elden Ring DLC. Considering Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have shows planned at this year's Tokyo Game Show, many fans have their fingers crossed that some form of Elden Ring DLC could be announced for then. Already, it is believed that from leaks that surfaced a couple of months ago that additional content for Elden Ring could take players to the Badlands.

Whether Elden Ring DLC is announced soon or not, it is likely that many will be seeing FromSoftware's latest title make its way to a few more gaming award shows. There are a few games that could knock Elden Ring from a potential Game of the Year win still to come in 2022, such as God of War Ragnarok, which recently showed off a brand-new look at its story. Also, earlier in the year, Horizon Forbidden West, a game released at a similar time to Elden Ring, picked up a Best Game award win.

Elden Ring is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
