ELDEN RING SPOILERS AHEADMonths after release, Elden Ring players are still making discoveries. Sometimes these are small details, such as how Godfrey’s guidance of grace leads him to the player in his boss fight, while others dive really deep to discover certain elements.

Now, one player has applied their mathematical skills to the Fire Giant, one of the many tough bosses in Elden Ring. Players have to fight this giant through two phases, where one of its common attacks see it slam down its shield on the players. It’s easy enough to see how such an attack would completely obliterate any ordinary human, except the Tarnished is anything but normal, and now that player knows just how much mass, force, and strength is put into these attacks.

Redditor Nihlus11 crunched some numbers and calculated the mass of its shield to be 606, 521 kilograms, or 1, 334, 945 pounds. Counting bench press standards and average body weight, an untrained human can lift about 135 pounds. This means Elden Ring's Fire Giant is about 9888x stronger than the average American male in terms of lifting and carrying.

The raw force put into the attack further cements the Fire Giant’s strength. Based on the Giant’s attack patterns, Nihlus11 was able to calculate that the sheer force required to swing the shield comes out to 8, 659 tons. And while there are a few variables that Nihlus11 cites as making an exact calculation impossible, the impact force comes out to 147,807 tons. Peak Force is double that, coming in at 295, 616 tons.

In other words, the general strength of the Fire Giant is impossible to really imagine, and it says something in how Marika, the Golden Order, and Godfrey waged war against the Fire Giants. Indeed, players face the last one left alive to use the flame to burn the Erdtree and kick off the final portions of the game.

It makes it super impressive, then, that the final boss before players face literal gods in Elden Ring is not the Fire Giant—it’s the one who defeated the Fire Giants. In a way, the story comes full circle. Godfrey is banished to the Badlands as the first Tarnished sometime after the war with the fire giants, and he returns after the last one has been felled by the player. Of course, the player’s strength proves to be more than Godfrey’s, and in a non-physical way, more than the Fire Giant’s.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
