The Game Awards 2022 was a big showcase for FromSoftware and not just because of Elden Ring (though a lot happened with it). FromSoftware finally revealed Armored Core 6, exciting fans of the franchise who have been deprived of a sequel for years.
Elden Ring won some big awards, though, including Best Direction and Game of the Year. FromSoftware's final moments on the stage may have been ruined by a heckler, but fans should ignore him as the situation develops. Instead, it is Miyazaki's words that are the most encouraging for the future of FromSoftware, including Elden Ring.
During Miyazaki's GOTY acceptance speech, he mentions that there are "more things" he wants to do with Elden Ring. Of course, while balance patches are still likely to come out for a while, he's clearly not referencing those. What this appears to be is a soft confirmation of Elden Ring DLC, though obviously not outright. It's an exciting prospect, of course, and one that's hard to read anything else in.
It should be noted that, day before The Game Awards, Elden Ring finally opened the Colosseums found in Limgrave, Leyndell, and Caelid. Fans are being treated to new PvP content, and that's going to keep the fanbase invigorated for a while. However, many would no doubt prefer to see some story-based, premium DLC that dives into Malenia's brother Miquella, the Gloam-Eyed queen, or any of the other lore tidbits spread around the game. It's uncertain what direction when and if Elden Ring DLC will go, but fans would be excited about anything. And while not outright confirmed, the success of Elden Ring and FromSoftware's tendency to release DLC make the situation even more likely.
Of course, as Armored Core 6 shows, FromSoftware is not just limiting itself to Elden Ring. During a recent interview, he said that he tries not to think about Elden Ring's success too much, because he doesn't want it to distract him from his next game. He wants FromSoftware to continue making the games that he and the developers want to make, instead of being bound to Elden Ring. It's no secret that Miyazaki doesn't like sequels, which is why a proper Bloodborne sequel is unlikely to ever happen, but that means fans can expect just as much excitement and innovation in the company's next Soulslike title, whenever it comes along.
