Since Elden Ring's launch, players in the community have constantly speculated about what From Software could be working on for the game's DLC. Day after day, week after week, they circle back to one possibility, no more certain than any other but inarguably intriguing. The idea focuses on Elden Ring's Divine Towers, six towers spread throughout the Lands Between. Or, to be more specific, the idea focuses on an empty area of water that Elden Ring players believe the Divine Towers are pointing toward.

The Lands Between, Elden Ring's setting, is built very organically. Even the cities and towns of the Lands Between are chaotically organized. The one exception is the set of six Divine Towers. They're spread out like the corners of a hexagon and may even have equal distances between each corner. Then, if one draws a line between each opposing corner, they intersect at a single point -- and it's not the Erdtree.

It turns out that the center of the Divine Towers is in the middle of the bay between Caelid and Limgrave to the south, Liurnia to the west, and the Atlus Plateau to the north. Looking at it from the in-game map, the area where the center lies is covered in clouds. It could simply be more water, but it could also be an island. It could also be something entirely else.

Adding to the mystery, players that have hacked Elden Ring have been able to "fly" over this area of the in-game world to investigate what might be there. What they found was a notable absence of anything. It was notable in that a square shape in the water was there as if something had been removed or was yet to be added.

There's some lore that adds to the intrigue regarding this body of water, too. While Elden Ring only lightly touches on the origin of the Erdtree, the Elden Ring itself, and the nature of the Greater Will, there is a hint. The Elden Stars spell, found within the Deeproot Depths, mentions that long ago "the Greater Will sent a golden star bearing a beast into the Lands Between, which would later become the Elden Ring." This star, taken literally, could have fallen in this area and left a crater that's since become the bay area of the map. There could be a secret lying at the center of the Divine Towers.

Adding evidence to this theory is an old version of Elden Ring's map, more of a piece of concept art than an official art asset. This map clearly shows the bay area to be a crater, rather than a naturally-formed body of water. However, there's no island at the center, which could mean the secret of the crater's origin is hidden deep below the water.

None of this, however, confirms that an Elden Ring DLC is on the way. While the Divine Towers, the crater, and the lore behind the Greater Will coming to the Lands Between is all compelling, it doesn't have to be anything more than what it is. Everything in Elden Ring, and From Software's games prior, is shrouded in mystery. If anything, DLC for From Software's games adds mysteries, rather than solves them. Though, that shouldn't stop Elden Ring players from digging into the lore and enjoying it for what it is.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
