All across Elden RIng's The Lands Between, NPCs await the player for assistance with various tasks. With questlines leading to unique endings and otherwise unobtainable items, it is in the player's interest to help these characters and pursue their quests. However, FromSoftware's signature design can obfuscate quest objectives, making them almost impenetrable to the average player.

One such abstruse NPC is called D, Hunter of the Dead, and can be found in Stormhill, to the northwest of the starting area. Warning players about the nearby Summonwater Village, players may wonder what awaits them in this destitute locale, and where D’s questline leads. This guide will help players complete D, Hunter of the Dead’s quest on their journey to reunite the shattered shards of the Elden Ring.

Where to Find D, Hunter of the Dead

D can be found in Stormhill, northwest of Limgrave, where the player first enters The Lands Between. He waits just outside Summonwater Village, which sits in the hills north of Mistwood, southeast of the Divine Tower of Limgrave, and southwest of the Smouldering Church in Elden Ring's red-skied wilds of Caelid. He can be found just northwest of the “Summonwater Village Outskirts” Site of Grace, mourning a corpse at his feet.

How to Begin D’s Questline

To start D’s quest, the player must first obtain at least one Deathroot. These are taken from the corpses of certain field bosses that the Tarnished can find around The Lands Between. The easiest and most conveniently placed of these bosses is in Summonwater Village and is called the Tibia Mariner.

One of the four that players can find around the map, this Tibia Mariner rides a teleporting boat, summons skeletal minions, and spews poison at the player. To defeat the Tibia Mariner, melee characters may want to adopt a hit-and-run strategy, riding Torrent along his flanks and giving him a few hits before riding away again. Using Spirit Ashes to draw the skeletons away will also come in handy.

Once players have acquired some Deathroot, they can find D closer to the Village, at its southwestern entrance. Speak to him, and he will offer the location of a hidden portal in Mistwood that will lead players to the Bestial Sanctum in Caelid. This portal can be found just north of the Third Church of Marika, at the bottom of the cliffs, hidden behind some bushes. At the Bestial Sanctum, players can offer Deathroot to Gurranq, Beast Clergyman for some special items.

Completing D’s Questline

From now on, D can be found sitting in the central chamber at the Roundtable Hold, where he sells two incantations for Faith users. Here, D’s questline intersects with multiple other NPCs quests, which must be completed in a specific order to get all the items available.

Firstly, players will want to find Sorcerer Rogier at Stormveil Castle and complete his quest before progressing onto Fia’s in Roundtable Hold, and finally, Renna’s in Liurnia of the Lakes.

Meeting with Renna before completing Rogier’s questline will prevent players from ever finishing it. While players can still complete Fia and D's quests at the Roundtable Hold, they will be locked out from getting certain items until New Game +.

Elden Ring is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
