Tiger Woods PGA Tour is the choice game for anyone who likes golf and video games. It’s the cream of the crop so to speak.

Now comes word from the face of EA Sports, Peter Moore, that sales of the recent iteration of PGA Tour, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, were disappointing - especially on the Wii.

In an extensive interview with Eurogamer on the state of everything video games, Moore said:

“Commercially, the numbers speak for themselves. It's not where we'd want to be on a year on year basis. It's been disappointing, in particular on the Wii. There's no hiding, because the results are there. The Wii has been a disappointment.”

Moore is unwilling to comment on the reason behind the disappointing sales but speculate all you will. Most surprising is the most disappointing numbers were for the Wii console. Considering Nintendo's console is most easily able to replicate the physicality of golf, it's a bad sign that the game is floundering. With the Move peripheral available now and an inevitable patch for the PS3 version of the game as well as the Ryder Cup in October, Moore believes that there is still a chance for the game to redeem itself:

"We'll get a boost this September. Ryder Cup is in October. We have the Ryder Cup licence. We have online teamplay built into the game, but Ryder Cup hasn't started yet. Whenever it's in Europe it's a big boost for us because it's a popular tournament over here. So, it's a little early, but the early numbers are disappointing."

Remember the simpler times for sports games. When Brett Favre was a Packer, nobody cared about Soccer, and Tiger Woods was the most talked about golf star on the circuit. It isn’t surprising to hear that Woods' game sales are dropping - considering the backlash over his personal life.

Every sports star of the caliber of Woods has experienced a moment of shame where their “stock” begins to decline. Many of them are able to rise from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix - to go on to an even greater pedestal of achievement (see Kobe Bryant), while others never again reach that pinnacle (see Michael Vick).

Declined sales in the Tiger Woods IP might be temporary or might be an early indicator that a changing of the guard is en route. One thing is certain, as long as Woods struggles on the pitch, he will struggle on the sales charts.

What do you cite as the reason for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11’s poor performance? Is it the persona of Tiger Woods or a declining interest in golf games?

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is available now for the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360.
