With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S just a week away from launch, EA is revealing plans for bringing its latest titles to next-gen consoles. Some titles will receive full next-gen upgrades, such as Madden 21 and FIFA 21. However, other EA titles will simply be backward compatible with a few enhancements.

EA has been making headlines recently, rumored to be working on major projects and renewing its deals with the NHL and UFC. Now, the video game company is setting its plans for the new systems in motion.

In an official blog post, EA detailed which titles are getting next-gen upgrades and which ones are backward compatible. The transition to a new generation of consoles is never smooth, apparent with the inconsistencies of EA's upgrades. For example, the Easter egg-riddled Star Wars: Squadrons is receiving new FPS modes on the Xbox Series X|S, but only improved lighting effects for PS5.

Here's the full breakdown of EA's next-gen plans for its current games:

  • EA Sports Madden NFL 21 and FIFA 21Both popular sports titles will be compatible with next-gen systems for players who own either the PS4 or Xbox One version of the game. Starting December 4, those owners will be able to freely upgrade their game to the next-gen version. The upgrade will remain valid until the '22' games release next year.
  • Star Wars: Squadrons - Squadrons is getting a frame rate boost on the new Xbox consoles. This option allows players to choose between either improved visuals or a quicker frame rate. Squadrons normally runs at 1440p at 60FPS on the Series S, and 2160p at 60FPS for the Series X. Xbox players can double that FPS by sacrificing some of the lighting models and textures. EA is promising enhanced lighting on PS5, though the game otherwise shares the same resolution and frame rate specs as the PS4 Pro.
  • The Sims 4 - The popular life simulation game comes to Xbox Series X and PS5. The game will feature faster load times and smoother frame rates. The release of the upcoming expansion for Sims 4, Snowy Escape, will be on both current and next-gen consoles, as well as PC.
  • Apex Legends, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, and moreApex Legends' resolution will climb to 1440p, with a formal next-gen enhancement coming next year. In contrast, EA sports titles UFC 4 and NHL 21 will run as they do on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. The soon-to-be-released Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered will also run at the same level.

All of these improvements should have gamers excited, despite some of the inconsistencies. Xbox Game Pass owners should be especially happy about the news, given they can pre-load games from EA Play. The hype surrounding the launch of the Xbox Series X and PS5 has hit a fever pitch.

News regarding EA isn't all good, however. Infamous for incorporating loot boxes and micro-transactions, the company is currently appealing proposed fines by the Dutch Government. These fines could end up potentially costing EA €5 million for non-compliance with the Netherland's new terms.
