EA has shared new footage of the hair rendering technology from its Frostbite game engine. The technology will be used to create better hair textures and lighting in EA games that are released on the PS5 as well as the next Xbox console.

In an unlisted video posted to its official YouTube channel, EA has revealed a montage of the hair rendering technology in Frostbite. The 28 second clip shows a model sculpture walking, with the camera showing how the hair looks from behind. Each strand on the model's head seems to move independently, rising and falling as the model takes a step. The hair also bounces convincingly as the model twists and turns, jumping through the air.

As well as the physics of the hair, EA also offers viewers a look at how the hair looks with different lighting. The hair will have lighter and darker sections because of how the light is hitting it. The default hair color in the video was a shade of blonde but the lighting technology also effectively hit other colors of hair, such as light blue, gray, auburn, black, and bright green. Many EA games have character customization gameplay and so the lighting and hair physics will be effective whatever the player character or NPC looks like.

The response to the video has been positive. Some fans have poked fun at EA and its loot box controversies, asking if they will have to unlock the hair physics from loot boxes or with microtransactions. One comment on the YouTube video from a user named Waspy says that "Now only need good games." and that has more than 270 likes. However, many are seeing it as a reason to feel good about games released on the next-generation of consoles.

Sony has said that the PS5's specs will allow EA and other game creators to make games with much better graphics. Developers will be able to make games with better quality textures, such as environment textures and the textures of the hair on a character. EA seems to be running with that and is making changes to Frostbite ahead of the launch of the new consoles.

The PS5 creator has also said that the console will have better loading times than the PS4. This will hopefully mean that no matter what new game engine changes and new textures that companies like EA create, the PS5 will be able to load them quickly.
